SDGs and their role in the Coronavirus pandemic

What Corporations and HOPE Japan can do

Five years have already passed since the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were created at the UN Summit in September 2015.
The 17 SDGs to be achieved by 2030 are based on the motto of ‘Leaving No One Behind’. They are not meant only for developing countries, but for the whole world to enact where every country is expected to fulfill its respective role.

So what do you know about SDGs? You might think they have to do with the environment or contributing to society through volunteer work. Or that SDGs are something businesses can tackle when their profit margins allow them to take action. However, the term SDGs has rapidly gained recognition among corporations, and the number of businesses contributing to these goals have been increasing every year.
SDGs

Challenges common to the international community brought about by Coronavirus - To Leave No One Behind -

In the first half of 2020, we were greatly shaken by the Coronavirus pandemic. At first glance it may seem unrelated to SDGs, but this threat that has spread globally has become a common problem that the world should unite and solve together, thus highlighting the importance of sustainable societies.
It may seem that we are finally beginning to see the end of the Coronavirus epidemic in Japan this month. But in developing countries with poor hygiene and where weaker health care systems exist, fighting the virus will be a long drawn out battle. In a globalized world, even if only some countries can end the Coronavirus epidemic, economies will not recover unless we can overcome this disease globally. Until then, it will continue to threaten our lives. We have now realized that we all share the same fate, thanks to the Coronavirus.

Rather than treating this crisis as transitory, we should assume that various crises can occur in the future. In light of this fact, it has become an urgent global matter to realize sustainable societies that are capable of responding to any crisis through viable solutions to environmental problems and improvements in social infrastructure in developing countries.

Investing in Our Future Well-Being

The novel Coronavirus appeared suddenly, but its effects have made us think about what we can do to achieve sustainable societies. Many businesses are experiencing hardships due to this crisis. However, we have also learned that SDGs can be important guidelines for corporations to survive in the post-Coronavirus world.

“Nurturing human resources centered on others rather than on oneself, building businesses whose mission is to benefit the common good, we as individuals and businesses should seriously think about how we live, and use this crisis as an opportunity to change our behavior. It is time to rethink how corporations act,” said Toyota Group's President Akio Toyoda. He further declared that he would strengthen his efforts to contribute to the SDGs. (Ref. 1)

Individual contributions are often smaller and time consuming, but sometimes corporations can have a big impact on the world when they act. As businesses can affect consumer behaviour, they can help drive individual efforts as well. Our commitment to SDGs is an investment in the prosperity of everyone's future. And once the world truly becomes affluent, the rewards will be realized by not only businesses but individuals as well.

HOPE Japan's SDG Initiatives

For almost 20 years now, HOPE Japan has been working in developing countries to help severly neglected communities toward a path of self-reliance. Our work contributes to SDG Goals 1 to 6.
Goal 1: No Poverty
Goal 2: Zero Hunger
Agricultural Support (Cambodia)
Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being
Installation of Water Supply Systems, Sanitation and Hygiene Education (Cambodia, Ethiopia)
Goal 4: Quality Education
School Construction, Higher Education Support (Cambodia, Philippines)
Goal 5: Gender Equality
Women's Small Business Support (Cambodia, Ethiopia)
Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
Installation of Water Supply Systems, Sanitation and Hygiene Education (Cambodia, Ethiopia)
The work involved in achieving Goals 2 through 6 all contributes to the goal of eliminating poverty, that is, Goal 1: No Poverty. Especially since the importance of hand washing and access to water has become very clear during this pandemic, HOPE Japan is diligently continuing its work to provide access to clean water, which is most important for people to be able to live a life of dignity.

What Corporations and HOPE can do together

If you are unsure about how you can contribute to SDGs as a business, and which goals to address, supporting an international development organization like HOPE Japan is a clear option. For example:
  • Donate a portion of your office or companies’ vending machine sales to HOPE Japan
Using this method, your employees or anyone who purchases a drink from your vending machine, can easily and consciously participate in supporting HOPE Japan’s development projects. When someone buys a drink from the vending machine to quench their thirst, they can help others gain access to clean drinking water, for their health, and prosperity.
  • Producing goods for charity events, such as T-shirts or products and accessories tied to HOPE’s work
Not only do the products convey your contribution to SDGs, they also lead to the recognition of your company among the general public.
  • Sponsoring a charity event
Create awareness and help solve the social issues of poverty and lack of access to education. Supporting a HOPE Japan event allows your company to gain publicity and recognition as an organization that values helping others overcome these hardships.
There are various ways in which you can work together with HOPE Japan. Apart from contributing to SDGs by helping the disadvantaged in developing countries, you can publicize the values and the work of your company, and strengthen your business philosophy of contributing to global communities. Your efforts can create opportunities for more people to contribute to SDGs and support the building of sustainable societies on a global scale.

HOPE Japan supports companies and organizations that want to focus on SDGs. If you wish to work together with us to solve these social issues, please contact us. We can work together to develop an approach that is unique to your company.
