SDG Initiatives of HOPE

HOPE’s contribution to the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals)

What are the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were set by the UN General Assembly in September 2015. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted to end poverty and to create a sustainable future by 2030, with the SDGs at its core. The SDGs consist of 17 goals, 169 targets and 230 indicators. Inheriting the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) that were adopted in 2000, the SDGs were created based on their results. One key difference from the MDGs is that the SDGs include actions to be taken not only by developing countries but also by developed countries. The United Nations, governments, aid agencies, and NGOs aren’t the only bodies that will work to eradicate poverty, but various actors such as corporations and schools are also expected to contribute to the SDGs for a better future for our planet.

HOPE contributing to the SDGs

In the 2030 Agenda, it is stated that "No One Will Be Left Behind" and to "endeavor to reach the furthest behind first". From its very beginning, HOPE has been providing clean water supply systems to the neglected communities trapped in poverty in Ethiopia, Cambodia, and the Philippines. We will continue our work to help such communities on their path to self-reliance and we aim to contribute to the achievement of the SDGs through the following projects.

Ethiopia

  • Access to Clean Water, and Sanitation & Hygiene Education
  • Women’s Income Generating Activities

Cambodia

  • Access to Clean Water, and Sanitation & Hygiene Education
  • Dry Season Rice Cultivation Project
  • School Construction / Education
  • Animal Bank
  • Microfinance

Philippines

  • Higher Education for Indigenous Peoples
  • Access to Clean Water, and Sanitation & Hygiene

Japan

HOPE can give presentations to schools, companies or groups on the issues concerning development projects and SDGs.

One of our staff spoke about SDGs and global water problems at Kondo Printing, a Nagoya business that incorporates SDGs in its product designs that are friendly to people, the earth, and our future.

Now that coronavirus has affected the whole world, the importance of collaboration between countries and regions, organizations in various fields, and across sectors has become more apparent. The 17 SDGs, including water problems, are common issues that each of us can help solve. Like Kondo Printing, we believe that flexible, unique and creative ideas which companies are capable of, will help solve problems in Japan and around the world.

HOPE Japan have conducted presentations at the various venues listed below. We can also provide online seminars as well. We look forward to discussing these issues and together creating ideas that you can use to contribute to SDGs (Please contact Fuminori Matsuura at info@hope.or.jp)
