We have been helping families in the developing world achieve self reliance for over 40 years. Helping the Neglected Poor Become Self Reliant

We work with the world's extreme poor to help them meet their fundamental needs through sustainable community development projects.

Established in Japan in 2001, we are active in countries that include Ethiopia, Cambodia, Afghanistan, and the Philippines, our projects focus on the provision of clean water, primary health, sanitation, micro loans, and education. We also supported projects in areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami (March 2011).
We are part of the HOPE International Development Agency network, which has been helping families in the developing world achieve self reliance for over 40 years. The HOPE network extends across 9 different countries and is headquartered in Vancouver, Canada. Our Japan head office is based in Nagoya, with representation in Tokyo as well.

About HOPE

HOPE’s work is people oriented, extending a helping hand to the poorest of the poor so they can regain their self sufficiency, or in cases of disaster, survive.

Our work creates long term, self sustaining benefits for people by providing for basic needs like clean water and education, and further developing family and community by teaching income generating skills, sustainable agriculture practices, and through microcredit.

Executive Director

The Opportunity - Job profile

Leadership & Management

  • Facilitate consistent and timely progress towards a long range strategy that will fulfill our mission of "helping the neglected poor become self reliant."
  • Develop, maintain, and support a strong Board of Directors by seeking and building board involvement
  • Keep the board fully informed on the current condition of the organization and all influential factors
  • Provide leadership in developing programs, organizational and financial plans; recommending timelines and resources needed to achieve strategic goals
  • Provide leadership in carrying out plans and policies approved by the board, ensuring ongoing, rigorous program execution, fundraising and communications, as well as consistent quality of finance, administration, and systems
  • Maintain effective systems to track progress, and regularly evaluate program components
  • Actively engage, energize, lead, coach and develop HOPE JP staff, volunteers, supporters, event committees, and partnering organizations
  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in development and relief field

Development Programs

  • Develop, alongside local partners, programs that will achieve the organization’s mission
  • Liaise with HOPE network for information exchange and collaboration, with a goal of maximizing the effects of the organization’s resources for the programs
  • Present the programs to the Board of Directors for approval, and report progress regularly

Fundraising and Communications

  • Maintain & expand revenue generation and fundraising activities to support & expand existing program operations
  • Lead the fundraising activities of the organization by recruiting and engaging donors directly, managing fundraising efforts of staff, encouraging fundraising among volunteers and board, and overseeing fundraising events and programs.
  • Establish sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with community groups and organizations.
  • Represent the organization’s programs, point of view and values to agencies, organizations and the general public
  • Use external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities.
  • Create a stronger brand by deepening and refining all aspects of communications, from web presence to external relations
  • Ensure that the activities of the organization, its programs and goals are appropriately and timely publicized.

Personnel

  • Take control of recruitment, employment, and release of all personnel, both paid staff, volunteers, and interns
  • Develop job descriptions, hold regular performance evaluations, and follow sound human resource practices
  • See that an effective management team with appropriate provision for succession is in place
  • Promote active and broad participation of volunteers in all areas of the organization's work
  • Encourage development and education of staff, volunteers and interns, especially assisting program staff to relate their specific work to the total program of the organization
  • Maintain a climate that attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse team of quality people

Finance and Compliance

  • Oversee and administer the financial stability of the organization, ensuring that adequate funds are available to permit the organization to carry out its work
  • Be responsible for developing and maintaining sound financial practices
  • Work with staff and the Board of Directors to prepare a budget; ensure the operatation within budget guidelines
  • Maintain and create official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal and local regulations
  • Jointly with the Board of Directors, conduct official correspondence of the organization, and jointly with designated officers, execute legal documents

  • Able to operate at a senior level with individuals who are C Level in their careers and companies
  • Proven track record in either sales or fundraising or both in Japan. Raising Money is a must.
  • Seasoned enough to both serve and liberate board members
  • Empower others without being afraid to step forward when it is appropriate
  • Able to move seamlessly between cultures and sub cultures, both in terms of developing world and developed world and sub cultures and networks within Japan
  • Develop Strategic Direction with the aim of growing the organization

The Opportunity - Requirements

Qualifications

The ED will be thoroughly committed to HOPE JP’s mission. The ED will have proven leadership, coaching, and relationship management experience. Concrete, demonstrable experience and other qualifications include:
  • Advanced degree, ideally an MBA or equivalent, with at least 10 years of senior management experience; track record of successful fundraising, effective leading and developing strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth
  • Unwavering commitment to quality programs and administration
  • Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage, and develop high performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget
  • Past success working with a Board of Directors with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships
  • Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in both English and Japanese; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills
  • Action oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people
  • Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission driven, and self directed
