Helping the Neglected Poor Become Self-Reliant

We work with the world's extreme to poor to help them meet their fundamental needs through sustainable community development projects. Established in Japan in 2001, we are part of the global HOPE International Development Agency network, which has jointly assisted 20 million people on the path to self-reliance, since its founding in 1975. Active in countries that include Ethiopia, Cambodia, Afghanistan, and the Philippines, our projects focus on the provision of clean water, primary health, sanitation, micro-loans, and education. We also supports projects in areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami (March 2011).

Celebrating 20 Years of HOPE

HOPE Japan is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year in 2021. With the continued support of our sponsors over these years, we have been fortunate to implement sustainable development projects based on our Mission to help the neglected poor on the path toward self-reliance. We also wish to mark the 10th anniversary of the Tohoku Earthquake amidst this coronavirus pandemic, the victims of which we have provided emergency support. In the current circumstances of limited social contact, ownership of development work by local communities has become increasingly important. HOPE will continue to follow this approach that respects the will of local communities and continue to provide support where necessary.

Projects

HOPE is currently supporting rural communities through the provision of access to clean water, promotion of sanitation and hygiene, higher education for ethnic minorities, school construction, microfinance and women’s income-generating activities in Ethiopia, Cambodia, and the Philippines.

HOPE's Contribution to SDGs

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in September 2015 include the goal to end poverty by 2030 and a pledge to "Leave No One Behind", a world in which all people can live with dignity regardless of the social and economic environment. HOPE is working to realize such a world where "No One is Left Behind" by working for the neglected poor as declared in our mission statement.

Poverty Cycle

The Cycle of Extreme Poverty

Extreme poverty is a cycle that entraps people. As affected people’s capacities are absorbed by the struggle for survival, there is often little that they can do to break the cycle themselves. By providing access to water and sanitation, micro-credit, and education, our projects holistically address the factors that perpetuate the cycle and help communities climb out of the cycle of poverty.

What can we do about this?

Our projects are designed to provide effective, long-term assistance to some of the poorest people in the world. By focusing projects on water and sanitation, micro-credit, and education, we work with communities and sustainably assist them onto the path to self-reliance.
